I think we are all waiting for the magic bullet to help us collectively and personally survive the latest financial downturn “cycle.” A lot of folks are pinning their hopes on this bailout strategy, optimistic that it will slow the slippery slope we are experiencing nowadays.
Like most of us, I try to keep to a budget: track income, stick within expenses for the most part, keep up with key trend information from diverse sources, plan the best I can for the future, and keep my fingers crossed throughout. With those economic issues that are beyond my control, I want those who are experts to make sure proper protections are in place, investments thought out, the greedy punished, and our best interests, short- and long-term, are guiding decisions.
So when I read “House approves bailout bill”, I want to hope for the best. Not only for me, but also for my family, community, country, and ultimately the world (nothing like thinking big, eh?!). And just as I start to think, well ok, at least we’re moving, I read an article like “ The U.S. Senate Shows NASCAR a Little Bailout Love,” or “Bailout Bill Laden with Earmarks” and I think when will we ever learn?
I’m not as naive as I may sound. I understand nongermane provisions are often tacked onto bills. Whether on the Hill or at home, we all have to report to our constituents. But, good grief, could they have taken the seriousness of the issue to heart and not included these items when we know money for education, social services, health care, social security, senior care, etc., etc., has been and will be cut, cut, cut? Do I really think the owners of NASCAR or movie production companies need a tax break?
Yes, I’m still hoping for the best. But I urge you all to keep as informed as possible so that we really know what is being voted for and by whom. Keep checking the facts as often as possible; http://www.factcheck.org/ appears useful these days. A good place to start on women’s issues? AAUW’s 2008 Voter Guides.
Health education improvement is my focus. I am prepared to launch a new program at a certain school that requires grant money to support me/my family. I am sole parent of my child. I have a doctorate degree in law and have MANY years experience in health and education. What is available? Dates?
