Last week, Sen. Pat Leahy (D-VT), chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, announced that Judge Sonia Sototmayor’s U.S. Supreme Court confirmation hearings will begin on July 13. AAUW will be submitting questions we’d like the senators to ask Judge Sotomayor during these hearings, and we want you to be a part of that process.
What do you want to know about Judge Sotomayor’s qualifications and judicial philosophy? Do you have questions about her stances on any of AAUW’s issues? What do you think the senators should know before they vote on her confirmation to this highly influential, lifetime appointment?
We will review all submissions and take your questions into account as we formulate AAUW’s formal set of questions for the Senate Judiciary Committee. The best questions we receive will be included in the final set of inquiries we submit to senators on the committee! Be an important part of the confirmation process by submitting your questions now, either via the comments section below or via our online form.
AAUW monitors the judicial hearings with interest because so many fundamental rights and liberties have been established and are protected by the federal courts, especially the Supreme Court. AAUW will carefully consider Judge Sotomayor’s record and will remain vigilant and outspoken in urging the president and Senate to work together in a consultative process to ensure that only jurists who are committed to upholding the rights of all Americans — in word and in deed — are considered for these esteemed appointments.
