AAUW is partnering with the Washington Mystics to celebrate their third annual National Girls and Women in Sports Day on Sunday, January 24 at the University of Maryland, College Park. This event is open to the public, and we hope that area AAUW branches and members will be able to attend!
The celebration will involve a reception and panel discussion with prominent women’s sports figures including Debbie Yow, athletic director for the University of Maryland, who has been recognized as one of the “Ten Most Powerful People in College Athletics” by the Chronicle of Higher Education, as well as Angela Taylor, the general manager for the Mystics and a former two-time collegiate basketball national champion.
After the reception, attendees can stay for a rematch of the 2006 NCAA national championship game between ACC powerhouses the University of Maryland and Duke University. The Terrapins won the 2006 match up, but the Blue Devils are currently ranked ninth in the latest Associated Press Top 25 poll. Come out to show your AAUW pride and to cheer on these student athletes. Let’s pack the house!
Tickets are just $22 each and include admission to the reception and basketball game as well as a voucher for a 2010 Mystics game. The Mystics finished their last season ranked third in steals with 9.24 per game. The reception begins at 6:45 p.m. in the Comcast Center, and the game follows at 8:00. Tickets must be ordered by January 22 from Maria Giovannetti at 202/527-7512 or mgiovannetti@washmystics.com.
This is a great opportunity to learn more about women and girls in sports as well as to encourage and celebrate those who have broken through barriers to participate in and lead women’s sports initiatives. Come out and support National Girls and Women in Sports Day and remind people of the important role Title IX and AAUW play!

What a fantastic event. I am on the board of an incredible organiation who’s mission is very much in line with AAUW’s “Know the Score” campaign – called PowerPlay here in New York. We would love to partner with AAUW to do a similar event in the New York area next year. I would love the opportunity to talk with someone who organized this event, to see if we could do something in New York next year. Best wishes for a fabulous event!
Also, check out this blurb about Nancy Lieberman. It appeared in an article titled:

NBDL team names Lieberman coach: When the Dallas Mavericks’ NBDL affiliate in Frisco, Texas, tips off play in 2010-11, the players will be taking orders from a Hall of Famer. Nancy Lieberman will become the first woman to serve as a head coach working with NBA players (and NBA hopefuls).
Lieberman had been out of coaching since a three-year stint with the Detroit Shock ended a decade ago, but Frisco co-owner Donnie Nelson hired her last month to make history.
