Three weeks ago I wrote about the lack of women statues in Statuary Hall at the U.S. Capitol and how the organization Equal Visibility Everywhere (EVE) was working to change this. Well, I am happy to share exciting news from EVE!
Although the state of Kansas decided 11 years ago to replace their statue of politician and abolitionist John James Ingalls with a sculpture of Amelia Earhart, lack of funding stalled the switch. So EVE approached state officials to take on the fundraising and expedite the process. This month, Gov. Mark Parkinson signed a formal statue replacement agreement, and Kansas has now entrusted EVE with the responsibility for making it happen. Congratulations, EVE!
When the big day comes, Earhart will become the 10th woman of the 100 statues on display at the Capitol.
In fourth grade, I wrote a book report about Earhart (one of the few women profiled in my school library), and I am especially happy to see her achievements honored in such a public and important way.

Yay! Nice to see my home state doing something good for once! You usually see Kansas in the news for crappy reasons or stupid decisions, but this makes me smile. Proud to have shared a state with this amazing lady!
